Lewis
Magruder is a director of theater and teacher of acting, directing,
and voice for the actor. Until recently, he was Associate Artistic Director
of Tony Honoree The Acting Company in New York City, responsible for
organizing and advising in all aspects of casting and auditioning, advising
the Artistic Director in selection of season, and producing and directing
the company’s renowned Salon series of benefit readings.
Lewis is also founder and producing artistic director for Broad Horizons
Theatre Company in New York City, which develops new works with contemporary
playwrights. This includes public relations and marketing, fundraising,
and producing readings, workshops, and full productions. For Broad Horizons,
Lewis has directed the critically acclaimed Evensong; an award-winning
revival of Cloud 9; an adaptation of Women of Troy;
and readings and workshops of new works.
Lewis has also directed regionally and internationally: A Christmas
Carol at the Asolo Theatre in Sarasota; Fool for Love
at the English-American Theatre in Düsseldorf; a musical version
of Alice in Wonderland at the Pennsylvania Center Stage; The
Magic Flute at Rutgers University; and scenes for the Met summer
opera program, Tel Aviv.
Lewis’s has taught at the New Jersey Shakespeare Festival and
the Summer Theatre Institute of the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival.
He served as Assistant Professor of Theatre at DeSales University, where
he directed Cole, a musical revue of the songs of Cole Porter,
and at Texas Tech University, where he directed Angels in America:
Perestroika. His courses have included directing, acting, voice,
musical theatre technique, and modern European dramatic literature.
Through the years of directing and teaching, Lewis has developed particular
interests in a number of areas: coaching actors to meet the acting and
vocal challenges of classical text, teaching actors the fundamentals
of scene work, and working closely with playwrights in developing new
works.
Lewis has observed, worked with and learned from some outstanding contemporary
theater craftsmen, including Jack O’Brien, Gloria Muzio, Oskar
Eustis, Jon Jory, and Gary Griffin. He holds an M.F.A. in directing
from the Pennsylvania State University; an M.A. in theatre from Northwestern
University; and a B.A. in liberal arts from Davidson College.
